Apple revamp desktop lineup

New Mac Pros, Mac minis and iMacs

Apple today announced revisions to its entire desktop range, with speed bumps and new chips for its Macs. The Mac Pro, Apple's professional desktop range, gets its first speed bump in over a year, with a new chip, the Nehalem version of Intel's Xeon processors.
New Mac Pros available
The new Mac Pros claim to be over twice as fast as their predecessors, with the graphics performance triple that of the older models. The Mac Pro can be customised, but comes in two main groups, a quad core or a 8-core range. The quad-core have 3GB of RAM as standard, with the 8-core carrying 6GB. They also have ports for dual-link DVI or the new Apple mini DiaplayPort. Prices start at 2299 euro or 1899 sterling.

On the iMac front, the new family include new GeForce graphics cards and there is now only one 20" model available. The two low end Macs come with a 2.66 Core2Duo processor, with the upper end model sporting 2.93 and 3.06 chips. One of the biggest changes is in RAM- the top three models come with a large 4GB of RAM pre-installed. Prices now begin at 1099 euro or 949 sterling. Prices have risen by 100 euro on both models compared to the last version.

The Mac mini now comes with a 2.0 Core 2 Duo chip as standard, 1Gb or 2Gb of RAM and a faster NVIDIA 9400M graphics card. Apple are also touting their greener credentials, claiming that the mini is now a cleaner and greener product, using 45% less power than the previous model. Prices start at 599 euro or 499 sterling. Prices have also increased here by 100 euro per model.
