MacBook Pro 17" launched...

FireWire 800 and 8x SuperDrive return; price goes up...

Apple have launched a 17" version of the Mac Book Pro, and this comes with the welcome return of a FireWire 800 port. When Apple launched the 15" MacBook Pro in January it lacked the FireWire 800 port, something its predecessor had (the PowerBook 15" laptop).
The 17" MacBook Pro comes with 3 USB 2 ports, one FireWire 400 and one FireWire 800. It contains a 120GB hard drive, 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo processor and an 8x SuperDrive. The SuperDrive in the 15" MacBook Pro had been criticised as it was slower than in the 15" PowerBook predecessor. The arrival of the 8x drive in the 17" model will be welcomed.
However the price of the MacBook is higher than that of the PowerBook G4 it replaced. The PowerBook 17" was €2629 (inc VAT), whereas the new MacBook Pro 17" is €2929.
